Paradigm of interethnic inter-religious and intra-ethnic tensions
While the common identity in the mono-ethnic states comes out of common history, language, religion and other elements, that in multi-ethnic states is a source of divisions. The transition from “the time of ideology” to “the time of the culture” which coincides with the dissolution of socialist system, again pitted the collective cultural identities. The homogenization of the different identities on ideological grounds during the time of Socialist Yugoslavia, gained to suppress somehow the promotions of collective national feelings, but after the collapse of this system, a fast “explosion” of ethnic discourse happened (new plays, narratives, rituals, social strategies) with strong elements of nationalism which led then to tragic proportions in this region. But, the game with the collective identities is not over yet, especially in the Balkans, where always consumers can be found, together with its “producers” incarnated into political elites.
